A TWO TEACHERS’ HOUSE
Her mother taught me technical lessons in elementary school and she was one of my two favourite teachers - the other being my math teacher. Her brother, although only a year older than me, ran a modeling club and taught me how to work with balsa, which is still my favourite modeling material today. While in high school, we spent endless hours discovering the first computer wonders. This brought us closer to the point that her brother became one of my best friends and partner in founding a company that later marked a quarter of a century of our lives.
So when Eva came to me and asked me if I was designing a new home for her and her partner, I felt like I was working for a family member.
The plot is certainly not one of my typical locations in remote nature and with varied relief, but for flat land of approximately square shape in an urbanized settlement, where the positioning and dimensions of the building itself and the architectural typology were largely prescribed in advance.
Since the task dictated the design of a house for two, where her son - a pilot - can also live independently when he is at home, we decided on the minimum size. We kept the interior disposition as simple as possible. The northern part of the ground floor is constrained in a narrow tract intended for service spaces - entrance with wardrobe, utility room with machine room, mini bathroom and a walk-through toilet that serves to both - the bathroom and the entrance wardrobe. The southern part hosts a small but functionally designed son's room with direct access to its bathroom and a two-storey living room with a mighty fireplace, a kitchenette and a dining area. The interior design is designed to reach a significant height and connect the living space with the gallery. The latter also serves as a home office and a gateway to the master bedroom to the east.
The interior is sensibly complemented by an outdoor, pergola-covered wooden terrace, the hinterland of which is offered by a low garden shed in front of the public road. It is surrounded by a small but neatly designed garden, which does not burden the owners with maintenance work.
With its design, the house thus follows strict commandments, but at the same time maintains its uniqueness and, above all, its adaptation to the specific living needs of the clients.
